My parents brought me to America from Latvia when I was three. The picture is from my ID card when we entered the country. The culture and language of Latvia are important to me. I have used the designs of Latvian textiles as inspiration for my work.
I began working with leather 40 years ago, at The Leather Shop on Brady Street in Milwaukee. After the shop closed I set out to work on my own. I started in the dining room, outgrew that and went to the basement. I soon outgrew that and opened a studio in Milwaukee’s Walkers Point area. Another move, and I’m in Grafton now. Doing this for as long as I have I appreciate how much I’ve grown because of it. Personally, professionally and as an artist. It’s been a great time and I’ll continue as long as I can.
I'm on the front page of the New York Times!Minnesota U.S. Senator Amy Klobachar carries one of my bags. I am mentioned in this article in the Times. Quite a thrill!
